Is the most impressive thing about Deepseek actually all of us?
How on earth did so many people, care so much, so quickly?
Getting in my Deepseek take in super late → as I often do with most things. :-)
I’ll reserve commentary on the technical discussion around Deepseek → ok fine, I think it’s pretty awesome, the slightly prolonged debate on the exact cost numbers aside → but what I found even more impressive was that this was just a technical discussion. People were downloading and trying it - enough for it to be the most downloaded app for a while. I went insanely viral (the Google trends data above/below of it vs. ChatGPT is pretty representative of interest) simply because people heard about it and were motivated enough to try it. The fact that it was “as good as ChatGPT” and free/cheaper was enough to do that.
I think the fact that my mom out of the blue asked me about deepseek and what it meant for American companies, and the fact that this many people tried it says as much about the broad consumer interest in AI as much as anything else.
Not only is the rate of progress in AI exponential, the curve of consumer interest/adoption is starting to bend pretty radically too.
